Around thirty William and Mary students braved the Scotland/Jamestown ferry on Monday November 23rd to attend a five hour long public hearing hosted by the Surry County planning and zoning commission. The hearing was held to review the application submitted by Old Dominion Electrical Cooperative (ODEC) to rezone a plot of land in the town of Dendron from agricultural use to heavy industrial use. Jeanne Zeidler, the current Mayor of Williamsburg, announced Friday that she will not be seeking re-election.The Mayor's fourth term ends June 30, 2010. On Thursday December 10th, Williamsburg City Council considered formal amendments to its infamous three-person rule, which restricts the number of non-related people who can rent a house to no more than three. The City of Williamsburg has issued eviction notices to at least six houses found to be in violation of the three person to a house rule. Zoning Administrator Rodney Rhodes confirmed to The Informer that letters have been sent to numerous houses threatening renters with eviction. (13) comments
The Undergraduate/Graduate Networking Day took place last Thursday in the Sadler Center. The event, which was held by the Graduate Council, offered undergraduate students a chance to meet with grad students in a variety of areas. On the night of Dec 6th the popular student run coffee house, The Meridian, was robbed by a currently unknown person. According to manager Kim Lincoln there were no signs of forced entry, or any other contents of the coffeehouse broken. The contents of the cash register were stolen, however. (3) comments
Governor-elect Bob McDonnell is slated to give the keynote address at the College's annual Charter Day ceremony, scheduled for February 6th. The event was organized by Students for a Better Williamsburg, and served as the finale of several such events hosted by the student-led political action committee that advocates for William and Mary students. In a letter to the William and Mary community today, President Reveley announced a mid-year tuition increase of $300 for all undergraduate, business and law students. An additional $300,000 in financial aid will be distributed to offset costs for some families. (2) comments

Michael Powell, former Rector and chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, spoke on November 3 about community values as part of a series of lectures during Ethics Week. The Office of Student Activities clamped down on chalking on campus paths and buildings this past week after a rise in pathway promotions by campus organizations. In a November 10 email to student organizations and officers, Ann Repeta of the Office of Student Activities stated, "Over the past few weeks the Office of Student Activities has noticed an increase in non-permitted chaulking [sic] of sidewalks around campus. Police have uncovered the body of Michael Allen Grimes, 47, within the College Woods off of Jamestown Road. Mr. Grimes, who was last seen in New Town Shopping Center in mid - October, was reported missing on Oct. 19th. Police have ruled the death a suicide after an autopsy last Monday. (0) comments
The College was forced to cancel classes Thursday afternoon when rainy conditions began to deteriorate. The decision came after a number of roads in the Williamsburg area were closed to traffic. Swem Library was also closed early, shutting its doors at 8 pm. (0) comments
The Student Assembly's voter registration drive has so far come short of expectations, registering only 300 students to vote in the area prior to the Nov. 4th elections.
