The most notable event at Tuesday's Student Assembly Senate meeting was the condemnation of recent Flat Hat Student Assembly coverage, voiced by several senators. Described as "a cheap shot" by Sen. Michael Douglass ('11), it was equally derided by Sens. Matt Beato ('09) and Walter McClean ('09), who is also the Senate's chairman. Mr. Beato explained, with Flat Hat in hand, "I've been frustrated with The Flat Hat's last few issues.…Much of the work that we do happens outside of Senate meetings…I don't think that one hour on Tuesday night is the most important function of the SA."

The pending results of the Comprehensive Financial Investigation Act were also discussed and are scheduled to be released next week. A slew of new SA executives were confirmed at Tuesday's meeting. Sravya Yeleswarapu ('10) was confirmed as undersecretary to the BOV. She will be one of only two undergraduate students attending the 17 member meetings along with SA President Valerie Hopkins ('09).

Antonio M. Elias ('09), very active in Young Democrats, was confirmed as undersecretary to Richmond. He will now be making sure that the "legislature is aware of what is good for students here...which is pretty much true for the rest of the Commonwealth." He will also take part in the planning of an SA intern program where students from the college will be paired up with state legislators. Of the "140 representatives there are only 40 student interns," whereas in DC "there are 25 for each representative begging for that job."

David Witkowsky ('09) was confirmed as secretary of Public Affairs, and lauded as having "jumped at his position with rigor." He has already met with the mayor, and remains in close correspondence with Ms. Hopkins.

Sen. Ben Brown's ('09) legislation appropriating 19,500 for 15 new AEDs in on-campus locations and requiring CPR and AED certification for RAs was approved. Ms. Hopkins also signed the Amethyst Act and the Student Choice Mascot Act, and a subsequent committee will be formed soon.
